Now that Fantasy Fets is over it marks the invasion of the Parro. The term “Parrot Head” began in 1985 at a Jimmy Buffett concert at the Timberwolf Amphitheater at Kings Island amusement park outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. Buffett has said numerous times that he attributes much of his fame to this area. This term essentially means that one is a fan. At the show, Jimmy commented about everyone wearing Hawaiian shirts and parrot hats and how they kept coming back to see his shows, just like Deadheads. Timothy B. Schmit, then a member of the Coral Reefer Band (now with Eagles), coined the term “Parrot Head” to describe each of those fans. Each year theye come to Key West to ostensible have a “Meeting of the Minds” but they just party, party, party and raise money for their favorite local charity pick in the process. We are grateful for their visits!
Just about when our little island thinks they have recovered, another invasion by the Super Power Boat racers occurs. The 30 Annual Key West World Championships is one of the most popular events for locals and visitors alike. It starts out Sunday, Nov 7th with a parade down Duval Street featuring some of the most beautiful, incredible race boats you will ever see. The fast past world of super power boats continues in Truman Annex at the Outer Mole where they establish the Race Village, conduct boat inspections and trial runs starting the actual Races on Wednesday, the 10th which runs through the weekend. If you are in town and get a chance to view these incredible pieces of machinery operated by very talented (and to my mind, brave and a little crazy) drivers, you won’t be disappointed!
